Fools Banquet 2008
Jan 28 - Feb 2, 2008
What was Fools Banquet '08 like? Check in with Zac: he posted a Fools Banquet video FUTY for fanclub members on hanson.net. There was one blip in the mix: both the audio engineers were out with the flu, so most of the demos were recorded acoustically.
Hanson invited 12 musicians to their Tulsan hideaway, 3CG Studios, for Fools Banquet 2008. They formed 4 groups and spread out over Hanson's studio/house to write. Since there are two studios to record in and four groups, I'm sure every group got a turn in the studio to record their days' song. One of the writing sessions was laid out like this:
- Blue room: Kai and Stephen
- Flower room: Zac, Pat and Jason
- Library: Taylor, Keaton and Kate
- Studio B: Andrew, Jesse, and Ike
The Songs (some of them)
- An Evening At The Big Top
- How We Got Here
- Anybody Out There
- See You Again
(P.McGee, K.Simons, S.Kellogg)
- Catching Up
- Wait For Me
- Story Of Your Life
(I.Hanson, Z.Malloy, J.Mraz)
An Evening At The Big Top
Hanson released this song on their website for fanclub members for Halloween 2008. It's a great song, and a bit of a departure for Hanson in its slight creepy factor. Check it out if you get the chance!
Story Of Your Life
Isaac, Zac Malloy and Jason Mraz wrote "Story Of Your Life", which was later recorded by the band To Have Heroes (listen on myspace).
"I went over to Studio A where Isaac Hanson, Jason Mraz and a guy named Zac Malloy were recording the song they wrote. It was a song called "The Story of Your Life"...cheesy title (but I don't know that another title would work) but seriously one of the most genius songs I've heard in a long time." - Chris Sligh
An evening at the big top, candy corn and gum drops. A main event, a spectacle of bravery, insanity. Stay close to mother, scream to your daddy. Pray that the acrobats come home alive. The rings go around and around. Did you see the fire breather going up in flames? Did you see the juggler throwing up his blades? Did you see the lion living in his chains? Isnt it a shame that he wasnt tamed. To catch a glimpse of elephants to see the band parade, a serenade. It could change the sunset, the way you're looking at your life. What to tell the ones you're lovin' when its right. The circus might. All in one night. The rings go around and around. Little girls and boys, better do your chores. Learn to tie your shoes, a circus life's not for you. An evening at the big top, candy corn and gum drops. A Main event, a spectacle of bravery, insanity. Stay close to mother, scream to your daddy. Pray that the acrobats come home alive. The rings go around and around.
Story Of Your Life Lyrics
Every story has a writer whose life has been inspired by love, or a desire to get inside of the mind of the reader, or at least get to the next page. Every movie has a part where they get to the heart of the matter, foreshadowing what might be happening, whether or not there's a trapdoor in the floor of the stage. So I'm trying to read ‘cause I'm dying to see. Who I will be in the story of your life. Where will I be if you close the book tonight? Am I the hero or the villain? Is it a history or fiction? Will I still be here in the end in the story of your life. In the story of your life In the novel I'm writing, I decided I'm using the actual identities instead misleading the people I love. 'Cause they're the ones who need it the most. Every chapter is another beginning, a beginning to guess if my character's in over his head ‘cause of something he said, or maybe something he wrote. So I'm trying to read ‘cause I'm dying to see who I will be in the story of your life. Where will I be if you close the book tonight? Am I the hero or the villain? Is it a history or fiction? Will I still be here in the end, in the story of your life? Tell me, Juliet, can we make it through this act without a tragedy? Oh, let's get through this scene ‘cause I'm dying to see if I will be in the story of your life. Where will I be if you close the book tonight? Who will I be in the story of your life? Where will I be if you hold the book tonight? Who will I be in the story of your life?
Who Showed Up
Stephen has known Hanson for awhile now. They opened for Hanson's 2008 tour. Both artists then took performed in The Rock Boat IX (2009), a floating music festival posing as a cruise. His band was signed to Universal but went indie to work with a label attached to Red Light Management.

Kai Kennedy is a vocalist and plays lead guitar for doo-wop punk band Locksley, now hailing from Brooklyn, which opened for Hanson on tour. Locksley started in Wisconsin as a bunch of guys in a band after high school, and have been together for quite awhile now.

Jesse Laz is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Locksley. His little brother Jesse is the bassist. Locksley opened for most of Hanson's 's 2007 The Walk tour.

Zac Maloy released two albums as a solo artist which were fairly popular in the Southwest but did not chart nationally, and has since become a songwriter and producer. Maloy has his own recording studio, Rosewater Studios, in Tulsa. The Tulsa music scene isn't super large, so I'm guessing Maloy ran into Hanson one time in their hometown.

Pat McGee opened for Hanson on the Live & Electric Tour in 2005. He was on a label for awhile, but is now an indie artist. Pat's blog says this of his connection with Hanson: "Most of you know that we did a tour with those guys and hit it off. "

Jason released his debut alubm in 2002, Waiting For My Rocket To Come. I really enjoyed the feel of the album and had it on a pretty frequent rotation. He's put out 2 albums since and has a third album coming out in 2011. He's big into charitable causes like Hanson.

Andrew was working full-time and decided he wanted to be a musician instead. He wrote some songs that fell into the hands of Joe Simpson (Jessica's dad), who had Ryan Cabrera record a couple of them for his album. Andrew's first album, Fifty Miles to Chicago, was released in January 2008 on an indie label.

Keaton is a really varied musician: producing, writing, singing, playing bass & guitar. He's worked with various bands as well as performing his own music. is He opened for Hanson for 3 venues in their 2007 tour, The Walk. Hanson and Keaton must have gotten along well, since he popped up the next year at Fools Banquet.

Chris is best known for being a finalist in American Idol in 2007. He has mixed feelings about what Idol has done for his career, but seems to be doing well for himself as a Christian music artist. He has this really detailed blog post about Fools Banquet 2008. Here's what he had to say about Hanson in it: "Seriously these guys are some of the smartest, savviest, most incredible musicians I've met. They are serious about their craft and they have serious skills." That makes me happy.

Kate has recorded 2 albums with MySpace records, and started acting as Mia Cataloano of One Tree Hill in 2008. She opened for Hanson in April and May of 2008. Do we sense a theme here with all the opening acts?
